Demand a Better Project - Proctor Multifamily

The City of Tacoma is now considering approval of a poorly design building that does not fit its surroundings or mitigate the project impacts.  This fundraiser is to raise the money needed to appeal the project to Superior Court.

The City of Tacoma is considering approval of a new apartment building containing 95 micro and studio apartments with 45 parking stalls at the corner of N 27th Street and N Adams Street in the Proctor district. The project equates to a density of approximately 266 units per acre and immediately abuts single family (R2) zoned properties and 1.5 story homes to the east and north. Permits will be issued for this project as soon as November 25, 2020 if an appeal is not filed in Pierce County Superior Court before then. Several project opponents have begun organizing and have hired an attorney to appeal the decision to approve the project. An appeal will likely cost between $25,000 and $40,000. We are seeking contributions from other project opponents and stakeholders in order to wage this appeal and ensure a better outcome at this location.  All donations will be used to pay attorney fees related to appeals of this project.

We do not oppose a project at this location, but we demand a better project for our neighborhood. We also demand that the project mitigate its environmental impacts including traffic, pedestrian safety, noise, aesthetics, light, and parking as required under the State Environmental Policy Act. The City has already granted an 8-year property tax exemption to the developer and vacated a portion of N Adams Street to benefit the developer. The City is now attempting to approve a poorly designed building that does not fit its surroundings and does not adequately mitigate the project impacts.

The City received comments expressing concerns from more than 200 neighbors and has failed to require the developer to evaluate or adequately mitigate these legitimate concerns. Please consider donating to help cover attorney fees for an appeal. The more support we have, the more likely the developer will be willing to compromise and deliver a better project for the neighborhood.
