Hey All,
Update Week 1: Thank you so much everyone who donated! After a week of making the original design by Suey Sew Shop, we had to do some R&D and came up with a new design thats faster to make, and uses less resources, but should still be just as effective when worn properly.
We're doing this for people like my roommate in Brooklyn, Mx, who has Lupus. My homegirl Danielle in Orlando, whose job is to pick up Corpses, most having died of Corona, and they're not even providing her mask or gloves. Nurse of the Century Farah in Toronto, who I'm really hoping Canadas socialized healthcare is taking amazing care of but still want to send anyway..
Anybody who donates $25 or more, we'll send you a reusable mask, and another one to a person in need of your choosing. Also please remember we're a small fabrication facility thats making these for immunocritical people and first responders.
Just a reminder cotton only masks are better than nothing but not by much. Anyone else making these, use something like these shop towels to line it.
So we're here in DefenzMechanizm's sewing and production facility, feeling like we have to do anything we can to help people in this Corona fight. Looking online it looks like most of the masks people have been making are just cotton. The problem being that cotton, at best, still only blocks at most 60% of particles.

They did exhaustive research using a particle measuring device to test what could actually be used to make an effective mask that was still breathable.
We initially spent almost $500 buying the materials to make the Suay Sew Shop variation that ACTUALLY filters out the particles and can be washed 7+ times.
We want to make these for people in the medical field, immunocompromised people(I have Diabetes so I've been taking this major seriously), and the delivery guys for themselves and anyone they see needs one.
After a week making the Suey version we redesigned it to increase our output without sacrificing effectiveness. We have 1 master fabricator(DefenzMechanizm) and two people to assist (Myself and Kate). After helping out with the initial production, Brian2Horns helped out with the redesign.
I know NYC needs them, I know Florida is going to need them more real real quick, and we have immunocompromised friends in both. I would love to be able to send a box to my girl Farah in Toronto who’s a bad ass RN putting herself in danger every day to help others(I'm not even sure if theres a need in canada since they have socialized medicine or if you can even ship to them, we're learning as we go in a crisis like everyone else).
We set the limit low because we’re all here donating our time, we’re just cover expense of materials, shipping, and a couple bucks for caffeine and keeping the lights on right now. The goal is to make 250 masks for the initial request for $1500. I would love love love to push that higher and make more masks.
DefenzMechanizm is also working on a line for her etsy store , but our priority is this, so if it's not stocked, it means we haven't had time for anything besides this.
If it goes up, it’s to get more materials, make more masks, maybe even do a bit of research like Suey did as we have access to rubber molding things here(A rubber form with a removable disposable filter from these blue towels would wipe clean. There are also 2 people in the industrial compound who have been on lockdown, and another self quarantined maker just got here that could potentially help ramp production.
If, like us, you're recently unemployed because of this, please save money for food and living expenses, thats going to be the next wave of nightmare we have to deal with. We’re all recently terminated or had gigs cancel due to this, so we feel you. Just even sharing this is a huge help, the more people that know the better.
If you know any facilities that are taking donations and need immediate things before real medical masks can arrive, let us know please.
If you know somebody, or you yourself are immunocompromised and needs masks, let us know. The first batch I’m sending to my roommates in Brooklyn. One has Lupus, her meds are getting harder to come by because of rumored corona fighting abilities, and she was already assaulted at our local Pharmacy for clearing her throat while being a cryptid. In spite of it all, she’s a constant source of positivity. Let's all do that, everything we can to be more positive, and try and do some good <3
