A local family is facing an unjust court ruling that infringes upon their constitutional rights as parents, and they need our immediate support!

For over three years, two loving and devoted parents (and their spouses) have been subjected to a grueling legal battle due to a loophole in Indiana’s grandparents’ rights law. Nearly 11 years ago, their child was born out of wedlock—a simple fact that has now been exploited, dragging this family through a financially and emotionally devastating lawsuit. In Indiana, if you’re a divorced coparenting family or your child was born out of wedlock, a grandparent can challenge your parental rights and force you into an expensive and exhausting legal battle. Yes, you read that right—that’s all it takes.

Despite being responsible, loving, and fully engaged parents, the court has overturned their parental decisions, forcing their child into weekly calls and scheduled unsupervised visits with an estranged grandparent after five years without contact and no existing bond. To make matters worse, the family has been ordered to lie to their child about the forced visits and to hide the truth from them. This means the court is now also dictating the very conversations that parents can have with their own children. This ruling not only undermines these parents’ parental rights, but also jeopardizes the well-being of their child and threatens the integrity of their family bond.

As a mother, I could not imagine being put in this situation. Every parent should be outraged by this blatant violation of our constitutionally protected right to raise our children as we see fit. If it can happen to this family, it can happen to any of us. This is not the first family to be impacted by this ambiguous statute, and unless we take action, it won't be the last. No fit parent should ever have to endure such injustice.
