Defend our queer tango community from anti-immigrant attacks
Donation protected
The Trump administration’s cruel attacks on trans people and immigrants have put our community members at risk, so this pride month Queer Partner Dance NYC (QPDNYC) is raising funds to provide immigration defense for a member of our queer tango community.
Details:
QPDNYC has been offering pay what you can tango lessons to the queer community for almost two years now and has created a strong community of dancers, many of whom are immigrants, some of them fleeing persecution in their home countries. These are incredible people who bring so much to this country and our tango community. They are social workers, filmmakers, artists, teachers, and others whose incredible courage, generosity, thoughtfulness, and kindness inspire us every day. They make our tango community a richer, warmer place.
One of our community members, K, is an asylum seeker who can’t afford a lawyer and has been looking unsuccessfully for a pro bono attorney for months–unfortunately, with the new wave of assaults on immigrants by the Trump administration, immigration lawyers at nonprofits are already overloaded with cases and unable to take K on. After a terrifying incident where ICE agents raided their apartment building, making them afraid to return to their apartment, the need for a lawyer became even more apparent. At a time when the federal government is deporting people with impunity, including many longstanding and law-abiding residents, and sending some of them to mega prisons and/or authoritarian countries with zero due process, we knew we had to do something to help K.
We are aiming to raise $10,000 for an immigration attorney for K. You can find more ways to support @qpdnyc on instagram.
