Dear Family and Friends,
We have all heard heartbreaking stories of disenfranchised young girls in India being vulnerable to abuse, sexual slavery, and abandonment. When I was in law school, I made a promise to myself that I would adopt one such girl from India -- provide an education that would give her strength and confidence, and shower her with love, acceptance, and belonging. Her community would become her aunts, uncles, friends, and well-wishers.
I embarked on this journey with Children's House International adoption agency and have thus far:
- Completed over 20 hours of parenting classes
- Wrote an 8-page personal statement
- Gave detailed accounts of all of my finances
- Got background checks and CPS checks in every state that I've ever lived (12 total) and the FBI
- Provided personal references
- Met with the social worker for three home visits lasting several hours (with one final visit to go). During the visits, we discussed every detail of my life because she, understandably, wants to ensure the child is going to a safe and proper home.
- Got medical clearance from my doctor
- Underwent a mental health evaluation
This journey has been expensive yet rewarding. Unfortunately, the cost of international adoptions can be a barrier for many people who would make amazing parents but may not have about $60K up front to pay for the fees. I understand why -- the agency and the country of adoption have a vested interest in making sure they are finding safe homes for the children. I started saving up, and looked into grants. I am eligible to apply for some grants but a majority of the organizations who offer them require the prospective parents to be of the Christian faith. The Air Force offers another $3K which helps.
Throughout this journey, my family and friends have been incredibly supportive. Ya'll have shown up in the most amazing ways. You've patiently listened to my worries and debated pros and cons with me. You've sent messages of love and encouragement. And many of you convinced me to start this GoFundMe as a way to alleviate some of the financial costs of the adoption.
That brings me to this page. I've included screenshots below of the documents from CHI that outline all the fees, as well as a chart that describes the process to be transparent.
Any support you can provide is very much appreciated! There is zero obligation to help, and I sincerely appreciate everyone who has fueled me along this process. I love you all!
Love,
Deepa
