Hi, Henry and I are from Rumphi village, rural Malawi. Some of you may already know the situation here but there is no waste management in the village currently. For now, people bury the waste, fly tip and burn it, however recently the situation has become dire!
We have been campaigning to get the funds from the government to set up a proper system but nothing has come through for the last couple of years. Now we have sections of the village that are almost knee deep in waste and frankly causing a health hazard as well as degrading the environment - just imagine two years of your waste at home not being collected........
As a last resort, we have set up this crowdfunding page to start our own waste management project!
The Project
- in conjunction with the local schools, kids will have a section of their studies to learn the effects of plastic waste, pollution and health risks.
- a competition will be run with 'clean up days' where for every student that collects and brings a sack of waste (4kg), they will receive pens and books for their studies - students really struggle to afford these basic necessities for study.
- The project will also work in conjunction with the local prison. Prisoners will spend full days (under prison guard supervision) collecting waste in the area. The project will provide bars of soap to the prisoners (a basic item they are often without!) as reward.
- All the waste collected will be transported to the regional government site to be dealt with accordingly.
- On completion of the project a full report of the achievements will be written up and sent to EVERY DONOR to ensure that you can see the money has been well spent and we have a big, lasting impact!
Together we can make a huge difference and change this beautiful community of Rumphi!
