***UPDATE (5/6/22): Wonderful news! DC Welcoming Afghan Refugees Sponsor Circle's application has been accepted — AND we've been matched with a family of six!! We are incredibly grateful to our donors who have made this possible, and we look forward to settling the family into their new home.***
In the wake of a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, the United States has evacuated tens of thousands of Afghans in need of protection. With American resettlement agencies overwhelmed and help needed urgently to place families that are waiting to enter the country, the U.S. announced The Sponsor Circle Program, a grassroots-driven effort enabling community-led sponsorship of refugees.
We are the DC Welcoming Afghan Refugees Sponsor Circle, a group of friends, neighbors, colleagues, and other community members working to support the resettlement of an Afghan family in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. With our collective knowledge and passion, we are confident in our ability to provide the support required for a family and then some, but we need your help.
Through our sponsor circle, we will support a newcomer family by securing housing, covering utilities (including internet and phone), furnishing the home, acquiring basic necessities (e.g., cleaning, personal care, clothing, and pantry items), assisting in the family's employment search, connecting to health and legal resources, enrolling children in a school or daycare program, navigating local transportation options, and taking other steps necessary to welcome the family within a new community. Your financial support is critical to supporting the family as they restart their lives in the U.S.
We currently are undergoing the application process to become a certified sponsor circle. The program requires each sponsor circle to first raise a minimum of $2,275 per refugee before beginning the process of relocation support. (Refugees who are supported by a sponsor circle opt-in to the program in lieu of a traditional resettlement agency, so they must forgo the federal funding of $2,275 that comes along with being assisted by a resettlement agency.) We have committed to assisting a family of six people for a full three-month period, which we have estimated to cost approximately $15,000, based on the cost of living in the D.C. metro area.
We welcome donations of any amount! Every dollar counts to help an Afghan family begin again. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support.
