We are calling on our community to support a Nicaraguan mother and her three young children—an 8-year-old, a 3-year-old, and a 12-month-old—who are fleeing violence and seeking refuge in the DC metro area. We understand the incredible challenges that pushed them to risk everything for a new life, and we have the chance to help them get a solid start.
Our Welcome Team is committed to ensuring that this family has the essentials they need upon arrival, but we cannot do it without your support. We have received a $10,000 grant and are raising an additional $6,000 to cover housing and living expenses during their critical first few months. Your contribution will provide them with a safe home and the basic necessities they need to thrive.
Here’s How You Can Help:
Donate: Every dollar you give will go directly toward housing, food, and essential living expenses. The DC metro area is expensive, and we anticipate needing $2,000–$3,000 each month in addition to the benefits they will receive.
Join Our Team: If you can offer your time and skills—whether it’s babysitting, helping with budgeting, or being available for urgent needs—we would love your support in making a difference in their lives.
(limited) In-Kind Donations: Essential items like phones, furniture, or high quality winter clothes significantly impact their ability to settle in. If you have something to share, please reach out!

FAQs:
Why are we raising $6,000? We expect our guests to receive $2,400 per person through Welcome Corps, plus benefits like food stamps. However, the cost of living in the DC area is high, with a one-bedroom apartment averaging around $2,300 per month. We anticipate needing an additional $2,000–$3,000 monthly to support this family until they can secure employment.
What will my donation cover? 100% of your donation will go directly toward housing, food, transportation, and essential living expenses for this family. Our goal is to provide them with a stable home as they settle into our community.
How can I get involved beyond donating? We welcome anyone willing to contribute their time! You can help by offering babysitting services, navigating government benefits, or being on-call for urgent needs. Every contribution matters!
What is the time commitment for joining the team? We’re flexible! You can contribute as little as a few hours or be more involved throughout the 90-day resettlement period. Whether you want to assist with specific tasks or be available for any needs, we’ll work with your availability.
What items are most needed? We are seeking in-kind donations such as cell phones, furniture, and high-quality winter-wear. These items are essential for helping this family establish their new lives. If you have something to offer, please reach out and let us know what it is! We may not be able to take all in-kind donations immediately.
When will our guests arrive? We expect the refugee family to arrive between October and December. We will provide updates on their specific needs as we learn more.
