A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Turkey near the Gaziantep province in the early hours of Monday morning. A second disastrous earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit a district near Kahramanmaraş twelve hours later. The initial earthquake was followed by over 100 aftershocks and tremors throughout the day in many provinces, being felt by other territories and countries. Thousands of buildings have collapsed with damage to necessary infrastructure. The disaster, followed by interruptions to rescue efforts, has resulted in more than 3000 reported deaths, and 15000+ injured as of this post. The death toll is expected to rise to 20,000.
AFAD and rescue teams have worked rapidly to assist in areas affected by the earthquakes. Many governments, institutions and organisations have offered their help and support to assist in the disaster.
