URGENT CALL FOR SUPPORT for Indigenous Relief Camp and Sacred fire, Michan Miishagan.

Located in Allan Gardens in downtown toronto, the Indigenous Winter Relief Camp is seeking support to continue winter relief, distribution of survival supplies, spiritual care and cultural support throughout the winter months. They have now been situated for one month and plan to stay throughout the winter.

The Indigenous relief camp serves as a 24/7 warming centre, offering supplies for those residing outside including tents, winter clothing, sleeping bags, harm reduction gear, hot food as well as cultural support to those in need who make their way through. They advocate firsthand for Indigenous people to find services, support and medical care when they are in need.

This is a completely INDIGENOUS GRASSROOTS LED SUPPORT, which has been there for many Indigenous people displaced this winter by the housing and violence crisis here in Toronto.

The city of Toronto has closed many of its shelters hotels, and vastly underfunded warming centres and congregate setting spaces leaving many Indigenous peoples outside on their own traditional homelands. There are currently around 80,000 people on the list for affordable housing and 60% of Indigenous people in Toronto live in poverty with many facing houslessness or housing insecurity. In addition, Indigenous women, youth and 2 spirit people in this country are facing a crisis of MMIWG2S and the relief camp sees this first hand, providing protection and support.

This space is and has been home to Indigenous Nations since time immemorial.

Many Indigenous peers, knowledge keepers and others are taking care of the space and those who visit at this time.
