In December 2016 after experiencing extreme back pain for a month Dan was diagnosed with multiple myeloma which is a type of bone marrow cancer. The myeloma weakened his bones which resulted in 5 broken vertebrae in his back. Since then he has had 2 kyphoplasty surgeries on his back. He is currently undergoing immunotherapy weekly, bone hardening infusions monthly, and radiation daily. He will be in treatment for a year and at the end of the year will undergo a stem cell transplant. The myeloma has metastasized to his bones and while it is not curable it is treatable. Dan will require maintenance treatment for the rest of his life. Because of his initial back pain and subsequent diagnosis he has been unable to work for the past 3 months. As of now his doctors are unsure when he'll be able to return to work.
