Hi,
We are a group of individuals that are fundraising and collecting food items for the Daily Bread Food Bank in Ontario. Founded in 1983, Daily Bread Food Bank has grown to become one of Canada’s largest food banks. Daily Bread distributes fresh and shelf-stable food, and fresh-cooked meals to 126 member agencies and 189 food programs across Toronto.
- Over the past year, there were close to 1.45 million food bank visits in Toronto — the highest number of visits ever recorded in the city's history, and a 47% increase over the year prior.
- For the first time, new clients accessing Toronto food banks outnumbered existing clients, with a 61% increase in new clients compared to the year prior.
- Systemic racism is closely tied to food insecurity. Food bank clients in Toronto disproportionately identify as Black (14%) or Indigenous (4%) compared to the general population (8% of the Toronto population identifies as Black, while 1% identifies as Indigenous).
- Food bank clients report a monthly median income of $1,106 — well below Toronto's poverty line of $2,060 per month. After rent and utilities are paid, clients are left with an average of $9.17 per day to cover all other necessities, including food.
- Close to one in three food bank visits in Toronto are children and youth, up from one in four prior to the pandemic.
For those who would still like to help and donate but find themselves busy, short of time or out-of-town we are also collecting funds. We will be using the funds purchase the most needed food items in bulk and drop them off to the Daily Bread Food Bank. We are asking for all donations to be made by DECEMBER 16, 2022
