(En español abajo) Sandra and Henri were in their family van just a few blocks from home two days after Christmas to take their three children ages 13, 7 and 2 to Wendy’s for lunch. ICE vehicles pulled them over for no apparent infraction and demanded to see immigration documents. They detained Henri and he is now being held in a detention center.

Once again a family is separated and thrown into crisis needlessly. And this family has additional heartache. Henri’s younger brother had gone to the emergency room a short time earlier with a headache. They discovered a brain bleed and he has been in a coma since mid December. Henri is his only relative here. Sandra is besides herself with concern for her husband, her children and also her brother-in-law. The children, understandably, are both saddened and fearful for their father and uncle.

In addition to the health and well-being of Henri in detention and his brother in the ICU, Sandra also worries how she will pay rent and buy sufficient food without the income of Henri and his brother who both contributed to the household income through their carpet installation work.

In different times we might hope for a “compassionate release” for Henri given the dire situation of his brother, but it is hard to hold out much hope for that outcome at this time.

Sandra y Henri estaban en su camioneta familiar a pocas cuadras de casa dos días después de Navidad para llevar a sus tres hijos de 13, 7 y 2 años para almorzar a Wendy's. Vehículos de ICE los detuvieron sin ninguna infracción aparente y les exigieron sus documentos de inmigración. Detuvieron a Henri, quien ahora se encuentra recluido en un centro de detención.

Una vez más, una familia se ve separada y sumida en una crisis innecesaria. Y esta familia sufre aún más dolor. El hermano menor de Henri había acudido a sala de emergencia poco antes con dolor de cabeza. Le detectaron una hemorragia cerebral y ha estado en coma desde mediados de diciembre. Henri es su único familiar aquí. Sandra está desconsolada por la preocupación de su marido, sus hijos y también por su cuñado. Los niños, comprensiblemente, están tristes y temerosos por su padre y su tío.

Además de la salud y el bienestar de Henri detenido y su hermano en el hospital, Sandra también se preocupa de cómo pagará el alquiler y comprará suficiente comida sin los ingresos de Henri y su hermano, quienes contribuyeron con las ganancias de su trabajo instalando alfombras en la casa.

En otros momentos podríamos haber esperado una “liberación compasiva” para Henri dada la terrible situación de su hermano, pero es difícil albergar muchas esperanzas de ese resultado en este momento.
