Within the past few years, predatory loan companies have taken advantage of my mom and sister. They’ve been struggling to make ends meet as it is, so when a check made out to them was sent in the mail, they cashed it. That was two/three years ago, and in that time, a few missed payments have racked up unfair penalties against them.
My mother missed two payments in 2021, and upon resuming payment, Republic Finance sent her installment back to her, demanding the two missed payments. Shortly after, Republic Finance sued my mother for $2400.
My sister has been working to support her family, but taking care of young kids plus all life’s other expenses have left her little room to repay the loan she took out in 2019, now owing $3000.
Paying back these loans with ridiculously high-interest rates has made them even more financially vulnerable and has been a source of dread and anxiety for my family. It is important to note that predatory loan companies disproportionally target disadvantaged Black and Latinx communities across the U.S., offering high-cost loans to people with little to no financial literacy.
Any donations will work to relieve my family of this burden and give them some hope for the future. I cannot thank you enough for donating and sharing this fundraiser. It means the world to my family and me to have people support us from across the globe!
