Access to the right specialist cycle, alongside support from Bikeworks’ experienced instructors, made that first family ride possible. Regular sessions meant the family could keep coming back, building skills, confidence and shared experiences together.

That is why Cycle 535 matters.

NRP has chosen Bikeworks as its charity partner for Cycle 535, a challenge that also marks our 20th anniversary.

This September, six members of the NRP team — Matt Kennedy, Alex Stebbings, Dean Walker, Ryan Hicks, Joe Cowley and Richard Wightman — will cycle 535 kilometres from Land’s End to Guildhall over five days, arriving for the start of the London Walking, Wheeling & Cycling Conference on Thursday 17 September 2026.

The team aims to raise £10,000 towards increasing our specialist cycle fleet for disabled children and young people.

They are supported by generous shirt sponsors Idaso, The Safety Forum, Pave, Nationwide Data Collection, MatchTech and Carrington West.

NRP works across buildings, highways, infrastructure and transportation — shaping how people move through towns and cities. Cycle 535 brings that work together with Bikeworks’ mission to widen access to cycling and create more opportunities for disabled children and young people to ride.

Why the fleet matters

Disabled children and young people can cycle. What is too often missing is access: specialist cycles, knowledgeable instructors and regular sessions.

Across our All Ability work, the number of people taking part has more than doubled in three years, growing from around 2,300 to approximately 5,600.

As participation grows, our shared specialist cycle fleet needs to grow with it.

Different physical, sensory, learning and communication needs can shape which cycle works for an individual rider. That might mean greater stability, a different seating position, adapted steering or pedalling, or the ability to ride alongside an instructor or family member.

A standard two-wheeled cycle will not work for everyone. One specialist cycle will not work for everyone either.

At Bikeworks All Ability Clubs, children and young people can try different cycles, find one that works for them and return regularly to build skills and confidence. Sessions are free, take place in community settings and are led by experienced Inclusive Cycling Instructors.

Where the money will go

Money raised through Cycle 535 will go towards adding more specialist cycles designed for younger riders, including:

A van Raam Easy Rider Compact Small, offering a stable seated riding position and back support.

A van Raam Easy Rider Compact, making this style of cycling accessible to a wider range of riders.

An ICE Sprint X Pixel, adding a compact recumbent trike with a different riding position and handling experience.

These are three very different cycles because children and young people need different things from the bikes they ride.

Expanding the fleet means more disabled children and young people can try different options, find a cycle that works for them and return to ride again and again.

Every new cycle purchased through Cycle 535 will become part of Bikeworks’ shared All Ability fleet and create opportunities for children and young people for years to come.
