A Plate of Hope – Nourishment and Education for Children in Pefferville, East London

WHO WE ARE
We are plateless, a non-profit organisation based in Pefferville, East London.
Founded and led by Angel and Larissa Snyman, plateless is committed to providing hands-on support to children and families in need, right where it’s needed most.
Angel grew up in Pefferville and knows the challenges of the community from personal experience.
Larissa is originally from Switzerland and brings valuable experience from the health and social care sector into the work we do.
Plateless is entirely funded through donations, we kindly depend on generous support to keep our work going — and to grow it where the need continues to rise.
WHAT WE DO
1. Soup Kitchen
In Pefferville, hunger is not the exception — it’s part of daily life. Many children go without regular, nourishing meals.
Our soup kitchen currently provides warm, nutritious food to around 350 children and 30 adults on 2–3 days per week — for many, it’s the only proper meal they receive all day.
Thanks to generous donations and sponsors, we were able to adopt a small plot of land in early 2025 and set up a provisional kitchen using a container. Cooking takes place over open fire or gas stoves with only the most basic equipment.
2. Education Support – School as the Key
Children from the most disadvantaged families in Pefferville are often excluded from education — not because they lack motivation, but because they simply cannot afford school fees. In South Africa, all learners are required to wear a school uniform.
To make education accessible, we support children not only by covering school fees, but also by providing school uniforms and school shoes.
We believe education is the key to a better future — and one of the few sustainable ways out of poverty.
3. Clothing Distribution – Restoring Dignity
As part of our on-the-ground support, we run a small clothing distribution point where we provide donated clothing to children and families in need.
The clothes come from both local donations and shipments from Switzerland. Distribution is done based on need, directly from the same container used as our soup kitchen.
Our goal is to help people in difficult life situations by providing them with clean, well-preserved clothing — restoring a sense of dignity and easing everyday burdens.

Your support can change lives.
For many children, our soup kitchen is the only safe place where they can eat a full meal, be seen, and simply be children.
Education gives them a real chance to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness.
Our current monthly costs amount to approximately 55,000 ZAR, covering both the soup kitchen and our educational support, including:
● Food and cooking gas
● Transport costs for supplies
● School fees and uniforms
● Emergency assistance for families in the community
