Honouring Private Kyle Adams, Private James Prosser & Corporal Michael Thacker

Cwmbran lost three extraordinary young men — Private Kyle John Adams, Private James Prosser, and Corporal Michael John Thacker — whose lives were tragically cut short while serving in Afghanistan. Each of them gave their all in service to their country, and each of them left behind families, friends, and a community who will forever remember the warmth, courage and bravery they each brought with them.

We are coming together to create a memorial mural and reflection garden in Cwmbran, a peaceful public space where people can pause, reflect, and honour not only these three servicemen, but all soldiers past and present. This space will stand as a symbol of gratitude, remembrance, and community unity.

Private Kyle John Adams (1988–2009)

Kyle Adams, serving with The Parachute Regiment was killed during a patrol just north of Lashkar Gah on 6 August 2009 when his Jackal vehicle was struck by an explosion and small‑arms fire. Just 21 years old, Kyle is remembered as a loving son, brother and friend, known for his humour, his bright spirit, and his commitment to his comrades. He was described as “the life and soul of any party” and a talented, selfless soldier who always rose to the next challenge.

Private James Prosser (1988–2009)

James Prosser, serving with 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh, was killed on 27 September 2009 when the Warrior vehicle he was driving was struck by an IED in the Musa Qaleh district of Helmand Province. At 21, James was a much‑loved son, brother and friend, a keen sportsman and a natural leader whose humor and warmth lifted everyone around him. Friends described him as “a true hero” and someone who would always be “one of the boys,” remembered for his kindness and his ability to make others smile.

Corporal Michael John Thacker (1985–2012)

Michael Thacker, serving with 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh, was killed by small‑arms fire on 1 June 2012 while manning Observation Post “Tir” in the Nahr‑e Saraj district of Helmand Province. A devoted husband, father, son and brother, Michael was known as a “soldier’s soldier”, admired for his leadership, warmth, and larger‑than‑life personality. His humour could brighten the darkest days, and he was deeply loved by all who knew him.

Memorial Mural & Reflection Garden

This project will create a peaceful, beautiful, and meaningful space in Cwmbran that includes:

A professionally commissioned memorial mural honouring the three soldiers

A memorial garden and seating area for quiet reflection

A dedicated place of remembrance for all soldiers, past and present

A plaque / information stand chosen with family input

Weatherproofing and long‑term maintenance to preserve space for future generations

Fundraising

We have set a target of £50,000 which will fund:

Professional military artist (Mentor) fees and mural creation by Cwmbran Art students.

Garden design, planting, and seating.

Materials, installation, and protective coatings

A remembrance plaque / Information stand with QR Code for further background.

Long‑term upkeep and maintenance

Opportunities for local schools, veterans, and community groups to contribute
