My name is Jade Leitao and I am a proud Cape Verdian American. I have been a part of the Women's Cape Verde National basketball team since 2005. It has allowed me to learn more about the country, my family history and origin, and to experience the culture in ways I could have never imagined.
Playing on the national team has granted me a wealth of wonderful oppurtunities and I wanted to be able to show my appreciation and give back what this game and the country has given me. In 2012, with the help of the Association Seeds of the Revolution (ASR), we started a basketball clinic for girls in Cape Verde. The U.S. Embassy in Cape Verde also helped to fund this clinic. This is my way of helping the young girls in Cape Verde to use basketball as a life skill, to grow and have different experiences, and to help them further their athletic and educational careers.

The camp is free of charge for the girls who attend and we provide them with whatever we can such as lunch, t-shirts, and a great experience!! Girl's basketball in Cape Verde needs more support and this is why it is so important to me. We started off with just 20 girls attending the first camp in 2012 to 75 attending in 2015. This summer will be our 4th year of the camp and we have decided to expand to 3 islands to reach even more girls! The U.S. Embassy is helping to fund our efforts which we are very thankful for but it will not cover everything. Myself, the other coaches, and staff work on a volunteer basis and we cover our own travel accomedations, lodging, food, etc. The donations will be used to help cover my trip and expenses while I am in Cape Verde.

The camps this summer will take place in July. I will travel to Cape Verde May 19th and start taking language courses to help me better communicate and understand the culture. My goal is to make this camp an annual event and ultimately to create a basketball program for girls in Cape Verde that will provide them with more opurtunities and to help them develop and mature throughout their lives with the proper support! I just want to thank you in advance for helping support my goals, my dreams, and my vision.
