My big sister is involved with an ongoing custody battle with an abusive former cop. She loves her kids and is an exceptional mother and has been a nurse for over 22 years. She is a woman of color paying an exorbitant amount of money to a court system that allowed me to be openly discriminated against while I wen’t to testify on her behalf. I faced discrimination where my LGBTQ identity and lifestyle was used as a means to diminish me and my sister in the eyes of the court.
WHAT HAPPENED:
I went to court recently to testify on my big sisters behalf in her child custody case for her two underaged kids. I am making this gofundme because not only was I horrified by the treatment my sister received from her ex-husband and the court system; but I’m furious that my sister is being financially ruined by paying the numerous court related fees. I’m even more upset that her former ex-cop ex-husband can walk through security and a beeping metal detecter with impunity, while my 85 year old grandmother was wanded after she walked through. This trial takes place where I grew up in the south, where the legal system has allow this awful treatment of my sister - who is a woman of color. And I’m personally offended and so saddened that my homosexuality and my lifestyle was used as a tool to claim that my sister is not a qualified mother.
I was concerned that me being gay and my lifestyle would become a topic in the courthouse. But I never expected the embarrassment and shame I had to endure as I was slandered on the witness stand. I’m very proud of being weird and different (and it took a while to finally feel that way) but when the her ex-husbands legal team started reading from my Facebook and talking about my pictures with porn stars as a reason to diminish my sister as a mother, I was for that moment embarrassed and ashamed of myself for being the person I was born to be. But not anymore! I’m here, I’m queer, and I’m asking you all to please help my sister out right now.
WHAT WE NEED:
This custody fight has been going on for years. My sister has had to spend over $10,000 paying for the incessant legals fees, several of which her ex-husband won’t pay for - because he doesn't have to, as he doesn't make enough money - because he was fired from his last job as a cop. How he is able to pay for his lawyer and being able to continue this incessant court battle is baffling and questionable.
She’s too proud to ask for an end to this monetary nightmare - but I’m not. And her ex-husband will probably keep this up until her youngest child turns eighteen in almost ten years or until he gets full custody of the kids and finally destroys my sister. But for right now I’m asking you to please help make it a bit easier for my big sis financially. Please donate whatever you can. ABOUT MY SISTER:
My sisters father died at an early age in her life and her goal for her kids was to give them the stable family environment that we never really had. She’s always been one of the most responsible people I know. She paid her own way through a private college and for the last 22 years she’s been working as a nurse at the same hospital.
My sister is an incredible mother. She LOVES her kids. And even though she is a great mom and she loves her kids she’s had to deal with severe repercussions because of her ex-husbands ongoing custody battle with her. Her oldest child who I used to stay up late gossiping with won’t even respond to me or my family’s messages anymore.
My big sister is one of the most independent people I know. She is going to be furious at me for making this gofundme for her. But I don’t care! I’m tired of us all holding our head up high while this injustice of the court system takes place. I’m not going to be quiet anymore and I’m not going to sit back while my sisters bank account is drained by a complete abuse of the court system and a vindictive ex-husband hell bent on ‘winning’ in any kind of awful way he can.
MY SISTER’S EX:
My sister and her ex-husband met 19 years ago and even though many members of my family and myself never liked her ex-husband, we supported her and held our tongues. I even kept quiet (at her request) when I witnessed him physically assault her when I was 13 - right in front of me and my niece, who was a baby at the time. I kept quiet as he bullied me for years and called me a faggot every time he saw me. I kept quiet for too long and witnessed as this awful human being made a toxic environment of abuse that effected our entire family. I should also mention this man was a dirty cop, he was caught lying and all his cases were thrown out and he was fired!
MY RELATIONSHIP WITH MY SISTER:

My sister is 14 years older than me and when I was a kid she raised me while our mom was busy working her numerous jobs. I love my big sis to the end of the world and back. I went back to the south to defend my sister because I love her and I know she’s a great mother. I’m so angry that this is happening to her.
