As one of only two elementary schools in Oregon to earn National Banner Unified Champion School status, at Sumpter Elementary inclusion isn’t just a goal—it’s who we are. Every day, students of all abilities learn side by side, building friendships, confidence, and community.
But when the doors open for recess, the inclusion disappears.
Our current playground quite literally creates barriers to inclusion. Children who use wheelchairs, walkers, orthotics, or other mobility devices can’t access the space, while students with sensory or learning differences lack safe, quiet areas where they feel comfortable joining in. As their classmates run, climb, and play together, these students are often left watching from the sidelines—missing not just the fun, but the critical role play has in building social, emotional, and physical development.
And this is happening every single day.
Play is more than a break—it’s where friendships begin, confidence grows, and kids feel like they truly belong. Right now, not every child at Sumpter gets that chance—but with your help, we can change that.
We’re raising funds to build a fully inclusive playground with accessible surfacing, ADA-compliant equipment, and sensory-friendly spaces designed for every child.
But we can’t do this without you!
Please donate today and help us create a playground where no child is left out, and every child gets to play, connect, and belong. Help make Sumpter Elementary a TRULY Unified school.
Before launching this page, our community already raised $25,000 to help us get through the initial phase. We're deeply grateful - and now we're continuing toward our full goal of $300,000. Our goal is to have this project fully funded by April 2027 and have the playground installed in summer 2027.
