Building Community in Ecuador: Support Our Micro Village & Retreat Center

Hello everyone,

I'm Shanika Malcolm, and I'm reaching out to you with a heartfelt appeal to support a dream that has been brewing within me for many years. For the past four months, I've been immersed in the serene landscapes of Ecuador, where I've found not just beauty, but a profound sense of connection and belonging.

My journey towards creating a sustainable community began fifteen years ago when I discovered Permaculture Design and the concept of Ecovillages. It was a revelation – I knew immediately that this was the path I wanted to walk, surrounded by nature and in deep communion with others.

Throughout my travels, including stints in various communities in the United States and a particularly memorable time at 'The Farm' in Tennessee, I've encountered a glaring issue – the lack of diversity, representation, and affordability within the Ecovillage movement. My family often stood as the sole representation of people of color in these spaces. As a single mother, I've seen the power & support of community. We need more communities & networks of support, wellness & connection.

Ecuador, however, has been different. Here, I've found not only breathtaking landscapes and welcoming people but also a surprising connection to my African heritage. It feels like home.

During my time here, I've had the chance to slow down, to heal, and to reconnect with myself and nature. It's been a transformative experience, one that has solidified my belief in the importance of creating alternative ways of living, especially for people of color who are seeking deeper connections and nourishment.

Now, I have an opportunity to turn this belief into reality. I've found a stunning parcel of land – two hectares, nearly five acres – where I envision building a micro village and retreat center. A place where people can come not just to live, but to learn, heal, and find solace.

But I can't do it alone. I need your support.
