Help us grow an even better Onion Garden for Westminster

For five years the Onion Garden has been a small green lifeline in the heart of Westminster – a place where friendship, hope and belonging bloom. A beautiful and welcoming space, full of nature, where people of all ages, from near and far, can come together. A place where people can escape the pressures of daily life, learn new skills, build lasting connections or simply find a moment’s peace.

The Onion Garden is made from love, laughter and life, where everyone is equal. That is what makes it so special. Jens and the Onion Garden Team are passionate about protecting the Onion Garden spirit to ensure that Westminster does not lose something so unique.

Having had to leave our previous space, we are raising funds for two important reasons:

1. To help us recover the heart of the Onion Garden and protect everything that makes it special.
Part of the magic of the Onion Garden is that it was never a garden rooted in the land. It is a collection of plants, furniture, pots and other treasured items that create a unique atmosphere – these have been lovingly collected and nurtured over many years through the generosity of volunteers, donors, local business, Greening Westminster and Westminster Council.

We are negotiating to move the collection from its former site through a positive, amicable resolution. However, regrettably, we also need to be prepared to protect the Onion Garden's interests by legal channels if necessary. Your support helps ensure we can do this while continuing to focus on creating a permanent new home for the Onion Garden.

2. Most importantly, to build a better, even more beautiful, Onion Garden in Westminster.
Jens has been working tirelessly to find a new home for the garden and has already identified two promising sites. Both places are currently closed to the public, but an Onion Garden would open them up as welcoming, accessible green spaces for the whole community to enjoy.

Working alongside Westminster City Council and other partners, we hope to secure one of these sites and transform it into a thriving community garden that will serve Westminster for generations to come.

There is still a great deal of work ahead but, with your support, we can create a new Onion Garden that is even more inspiring, inclusive and resilient than before.

What we're planning
  • More meeting and growing space – the previous Onion Garden was incredibly popular, but space was limited. Both the potential new sites would allow more people to enjoy and benefit from everything that the garden has to offer.
  • Accessible design – we aim to make the new space much more wheelchair-friendly, with accessible paths and planting, so the garden truly works for everyone.
  • A café, community gathering and events space – such as a greenhouse, to help support the garden financially.
  • Better soil and sustainable infrastructure – such as a rainwater harvesting system, garden waste re-cycling to improve soil, pollinator-friendly planting and beehives, and cooling spaces to help people and wildlife during hotter weather

Why it matters
Community gardens like ours do more than grow plants. They:
  • Bring people together across generations, cultures and backgrounds – everyone is welcome.
  • Support mental health and wellbeing through time spent outdoors and in nature.
  • Teach children and adults about caring for the environment and the benefits of green spaces.
  • Help green one of London’s most densely built areas, creating much-needed places for nature, shade and cooling during our increasingly hot summers.

Westminster is one of the most densely built parts of the country. Spaces like the Onion Garden are rare, and the demand from both local residents and visitors continues to grow.

Where your money goes
Every donation will help us secure and develop a permanent new home for the Onion Garden, build accessible and sustainable facilities, recover the treasured items that have made the Onion Garden so special, and meet the legal costs necessary to protect the project’s future, including solicitors’ fees and any additional legal expenses that may arise as we work towards a fair resolution.

We’ll post photo updates and progress reports on Instagram (@theoniongardenorg), our website and by email, so you can see exactly what your support is helping to build. We are a very small team, many of whom are volunteers, so thank you for your patience.

How you can help – even without giving
  • Share this page with anyone who loves London’s green spaces and believes in community.
  • Follow us on Instagram (@theoniongardenorg) and visit our website (www.theoniongarden.org) for updates.
  • Come and volunteer once the build begins — we’ll need helping hands just as much as financial support.
Onion Garden started as a few pots of plants, a lot of onions, and an enormous amount of stubborn optimism. With your help, it can become the community space Westminster deserves – bigger, greener, more welcoming and built to last.

Whether you can donate, share our story or volunteer in the months ahead, you’ll be helping to create something that will bring people together for years to come.

Thank you for believing in the future of the Onion Garden. We can’t wait to welcome you into its next chapter.

Thank you,
The Onion Garden Team
