Operation COVID-19 Defense Fund - Phase II

This appeal seeks to raise funds to help offset the costs involved in making protective face shields and other PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for our local hospital health care workers and first responders in and around the North Fork of Long Island. This effort is ongoing and the Leadership Team behind this initial Phase was humbled at the response we received in meeting the goal of Phase I. Now we are organizing for Phase II and have amended our appeal.
The idea to mobilize and fill this need was born from the hard working and honest values of several North Fork businesses and community members who recognize the unprecedented demand and selfless risks that our local hospitals, their staff, and first responders take to insure the most responsive medical and emergency care possible.
With the thought leadership of Jamie & Bobby Mills of William J. Mills & Co. https://millscanvas.com/ a locally owned and multi-generational family company, Phase I was pursued in developing a prototype face shield that has now been approved for use by Stony Brook University Hospital. This design will allow for rapid assembly of this critically needed PPE. Phase II will pursue additional prototypes of protective gowns and face masks for first responder and public use. The equipment and materials needed to produce the PPE continues to be sourced through the help of our Leadership Team.
Greenport Harbor Brewery https://greenportharborbrewing.com/ has opened their large indoor space and controlled environment for volunteers to assemble the face shields under Phase I. The space will allow for additional work to be done under Phase II when ready. Working in shifts, volunteers will follow proscribed safe distances in accordance with accepted social distance measures. Each volunteer will have the necessary safety equipment and work limited shifts under supervision of the organizers. The finished PPE will then be, cleaned and individually packaged. The costs associated with this PPE are $4 for each packaged shield, $2 for each mask and hopefully no more than $20 for a protective gown.
Between 3000 to 5000 face shields will be assembled over the course of 3-5 days with two shifts working from 9am to 4pm. As soon as the prototypes for gowns and masks are ready, we hope to fabricate similar numbers of same. The Greenport Village BID will serve as the repository of all collected funds as a 501(c)19 organization. Any excess donations will be passed onto Eastern Long Island Hospital for purchase of additional equipment as they have expressed great need for same, beyond our local capability.
These efforts along with the logistical, technical and financial support of Mark Miller, Bob Gammon, The Greenport Village BID https://www.greenportvillage.com/business-improvement-district/, Southold Schools Robotics Club http://www.rice870.com/ and Reflective Image Manufacturing in Greenport have made Operation COVID-19 Defense possible.
Our goal has been amended to $25,000 to include Phase II of our mobilization efforts in order to help offset the material and packaging costs under this appeal, any assistance or donation is greatly appreciated, as we are all stronger and safer when we work together.
