May 4th 2013, my best friend Scott Hachey was tragically struck and killed in a motorcycle accident. For anyone who knew Scott, knew he was always the first person to help others when he could. Whether that be helping a friend move, helping out with charity or fundraising, and in his early 20’s when he found he was O- blood type, he religiously donated blood. He would also run The Barrie Honda Half Marathon every year in order to raise money for charity. When Scott passed away, I promised to run that same half marathon every year (I loath running) in Scott’s memory, and continue to raise the money that he would have if he were still with us. I have run that marathon for 7 years now.
With Covid likely hindering that half marathon, I have decided I still would like to raise money this year, to help those in need, in the memory of Scott.
I started a year long mental toughness program on November 2nd, 2020 called Live Hard (75 Hard. Phase 1. Phase 2. Phase 3). This is a challenge created by Andy Frisella. One of the things you are tasked with during this challenge is committing to two 45 minute workouts per day, and one of them HAS to be outdoors. Starting this challenge is what turned me onto running outside. During one of these runs is where I came up with the idea for how I want to raise money, and give back to the people of Barrie during these trying times.
This is how it is going to work:
On Sunday March 14th 2021, I will be doing a 50km run on Wildwood Trail in Barrie, Ontario (1.7km loop). Then on
Saturday May 8th 2021, I will be doing a 100km run on the same street.
I have set up an email account [email redacted] where I ask that anybody who knows of a person(s), or family who may be struggling right now due to the lockdowns and the restrictions that Covid has put in place. If you know someone who is out of work due to Covid, is behind on mortgage/rent, has bills piling up, etc. Basically just any family that may need a bit of extra help, let me know by emailing me at the email address above. By emailing me and sharing a brief story about the family in need, you will be nominating them. The fundraising will go from January 23rd 2021 - May 12 2021. For every $5000 raised, I will be able to take on another family’s case. Myself and Scott’s mother, Elaine, will be reading all incoming emails, meeting with the people, and trying our best to choose the families we feel most in need. A $5000 cheque will be issued to each of the families selected when the fundraising closes on May 12 2021.
Also, once I have the final amount raised, we will also be taking a portion of the donations and donating it to Sick Kids Hospital in Scott Hachey’s name.
