Covenant House LA: Dream Big

As the new year approaches, I am making a pledge to make a difference for homeless kids in 2017 and beyond. Homelessness has always been an issue that calls to me, and over the past few years of working with United Way LA I have learned of many ways in which I can help to provide homeless members of our community with the skills they need to rebuild their lives. This year, however, I wanted to do something to help those who truly have no control over their unthinkable circumstances: homeless youth.

Covenant House provides loving care and vital services to homeless, abandoned, abused, trafficked, and exploited youth in 30 cities in the United States, Canada, and Central America.  The organization’s programs provide young people with the support they need to leave the streets and achieve independence, including workshops, career mentoring, one-on-one tutoring, and sports immersion.

What do I plan to do with the money raised? I’ve always been uncomfortable giving “blindly” to charities and not knowing where my money is going. After getting in touch with the center, they informed me that this is a common concern, and advised me on other ways to give and get involved. As Covenant House is in constant need of donations including clothing, bedding, hygiene products, toys, school supplies, electronics, etc., my goal is to raise $2,000 and use the funds to purchase items on a “wish list” for the Covenant House center in Hollywood, CA.

To make this fundraiser even more impactful, for every $25 donated, I will volunteer an hour of my time in 2017 to the Covenant House programs mentioned above. With my goal of $2,000, this equates to a minimum of 80 hours of service.
