Carla A. Constant is from the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in The Pas, MB. Many know her from either her role in the community as a nurse (acute care, community health or the operating room) over the years or when you would often see her organizing, promoting & fundraising for local running events for the community & more recently creating a Women Empowering Women walking/running group where 20 women supported each other on their fitness journey while fundraising to provide local youth with gym memberships, running shoes and allowing 5 youth from a northern isolated community to attend the MB. Marathon! Carla conquered her own personal goal in 2018 by finishing the Full Manitoba Marathon 26.2 miles. Carla continuously thankful toward her family & friends for supporting her in her journey to better health for herself & for her son Cruz.
Carla has a son, Cruz who is 3 years old & has been looking forward to becoming a big brother in January 2021. Carla is now 27 weeks 6 days gestation with a little girl. Unfortunately, on Thursday Carla had a ultrasound that was delayed due to COVID (which was a miracle to have). The appointment found Carla was dilated and in preterm labour which was compounded with a shortened cervix.  After a couple failed attempts (due to weather conditions), the amazing obstetrical staff at the Thompson General Hospital & midwives worked as a great team with medivac & life flight to get Carla to Winnipeg where the neonatal resuscitation team awaited. It has now been 4 days since Carla went into preterm labour and by Gods grace has not went into active labour. The doctors have talked to Carla about all of the possible complications that the baby may face & that it will be a long few months (middle of December) in Winnipeg (as long as no further complications arise). Carla is still admitted at the HSC Women’s hospital and will be assessed and have an ultrasound on Tuesday to determine if she will be discharged. If discharged she must remain in Winnipeg to be close to the neonatal team as the baby can come any day. Her baby girl will need the help of this powerful team to give her the best shot at life. Carlas partner Lyle has travelled from Thompson to The Pas to take their son Cruz to be with his grandparents and has travelled to be with Carla until she is assessed by the doctors. Lyle will be commuting to The Pas to be with Cruz to help with the adjustment as Cruz has never been away from Carla before this event. Carla will be be on sick leave but that does not stop the bills, obligations of her 3 year old, travel, room and board, etc for the coming months. In a time where Carla should be happy preparing for a new baby, she is worried about the survival of her unborn baby. As a way to help ease one of Carlas stress we are starting this go fund me account to help her and her family with financial aid as this is going to be a long hard few months.

Carla has given tons to this community to achieve health and wellness of those around her and now it is our turn to return the favor. Let us make this time a little bit easier for Carla by providing some extra support to help Lyle and Cruz visit as well as help with living expenses in the city while staying there.

We would like to thank you for reading our story & if you cannot donate a monetary donation please say a prayer of Courage for Carla & her unborn baby girl.
