Coup de Main is a communal anarchist homestead project which has been in development for a number of years. The property has sat abandoned for nearly a decade and a half before members of the Peoples' Defense League of Southern Louisiana went to check it out in late 2018. Their plan? To clear out the land and use it as a space for training and community organizing.
While it took a while to have the means to follow up on the project, the land itself served as a camping space for houseless folks, primarily queer and trans folks with few other safe options.
In 2020, Vermin Supreme and supporters converged for Coup de Gras, a Mardi Gras festival thrown in support of Coup de Main. The festival was used as a chance to clear out a bulk of the overgrowth, clean up some of the debris, and prepare the land for new development.
In addition to housing those in need and serving as an organizing hub, Coup de Main has also been adopted by members of the Libertarian Socialist Caucus of the Libertarian Party to serve as a base for the start of their variation on the Free State Project model applied to St. Tammany Parish where Coup de Main is located.
Coup de Gras may have given us a chance to clear out quite a bit and the folks living there have cleared out quite a bit more but there is still more debris to be removed!
Additionally, we need to build a water collection system for those currently living there, as well as an outdoor shower, composting toilet, a sink for washing hands and dishes, solar panels and batteries for charging devices, a backup generator, tools, concrete, bricks, wood, and other building materials to build the first living structure on the property. This will allow those currently camping there to have more adequate shelter and sanitation which is important during a pandemic.
So help us to build up our amazing homestead where folks can stay off the streets and get involved in community organizing. We'll only need more mutual aid spaces like this as the economy further collapses. Anything helps make this dream a reality.
