Join us to Counter-Act the War on Immigrants!
OLAS/LGBT Sanctuary Project, a fiscally sponsored program of East Bay Sanctuary Covenant, is fund-raising for emotional healing and support for Latin American immigrants. The Problem:
The Latin American Migrant Crisis has lasting impacts on immigrants. Many immigrants are unable to live full, productive, happy lives due to severe trauma they suffered across the border. Many also suffer from racism, nationalism, homophobia and violence in the US. The problems are worse than ever – recent mass shootings have triggered fear and our community needs to come together. What we’re doing about it:
The solution to trauma and fear is emotional healing and community support. OLAS has been providing therapist-led, serenity-building workshops in the Bay Area for five years. Now OLAS is planning a new series of workshops that focus on including more people we have not yet reached, and leading workshops in Mexico with asylum seekers who are waiting to cross the border into the US and are temporarily in an LGBT safe-house. While we have run our workshops on a shoestring, we need your help to move forward. We are crowdfunding $10,000 to counter-act the War on Immigrants.
That money will: pay for two in-depth weekend workshops, several one-day workshops in the Bay Area, and travel to run workshops in Mexico. Approximately 65-90 people will be served during with these funds. The funds will pay for participants to attend these events at no cost (they sometimes give a small donation of $10-30 but no one is turned away) by paying for the rent, food, three part-time staff people and three part-time therapists.
In our workshops, OLAS participants will come together to support one another during these tough times, engage in art therapy, take part in group therapy, and heal from wounds in a safe, loving environment.
Please note that none of this money will go towards “overhead” or administrative costs
to any “umbrella” organization. We are a small, grassroots, direct service program. Will you join us to make Counter-Act the War on Immigrants happen?
We started OLAS five years ago and have developed a program that works. But we need your help to make it sustainable in the coming years. Our costs have increased and we need to continue our services while expanding for future years. When we have a stronger financial base, we will be able to expand our services to reach LGBT immigrants from other countries and offer more workshops to our Latin American core group. We will be posting updates about this fundraiser on our Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/olas.santuario/Many thanks! Muchas gracias!!!!!!!!!!
