Cori's Journey as she recovers from her illness & amputation

Hello, My name is Christi Calamante and I am starting this GoFundMe account for my twin sister, Corinne Calamante.

In late November she lost her job and was denied unemployment. As if that was not bad enough on January 4 she was rushed to the hospital and was immediately admitted to the ICU. She was in septic shock, severely dehydrated, her blood pressure was extremely low, and her kidneys were failing. She was also on a bi-pap breathing machine. I was told she was critically ill, and it was a very good chance she will not make it. She was on a continuous dialysis machine.

Cori is a fighter!!!

After 10 days in ICU, she was taken off the bi-pap machine. She was still in septic shock and had 2 infections, but they did not know the source of the infection. An orthopedic surgeon was called in and realized that the source was an infection in her left ankle.

He did 2 surgical debreedments, and then was sent to UH main campus downtown to consult with a plastic surgeon to discuss restructure of the ankle. It was discovered at this time that the infection was much worse than they originally thought and a below the knee amputation was the only way to save her life.

On January 23, 2025, Cori had a below the knee amputation on her left leg.

She was at main campus another 6 days and then transferred back to Parma hospital in the acute rehab facility.

They say for every day you spend in the ICU it is a minimum 5 - day recovery.

Cori is just beginning the very long road to getting strong enough to recover and deal with her new life.

She will need to be at a skilled facility for some time before she is strong enough to come home, and we are being told insurance may not cover it. In addition to that there will be additional ongoing medical expenses and home health care and outpatient costs.
