On Friday, 4th December I will be leaving behind the comfort of my cosy bedroom and sleeping out in Galway’s bitterly cold winter weather with just a sleeping bag, as part of COPE Galway’s 2020 Business Sleep Out. The COPE Galway Business Sleep Out is an annual event to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness and raise funds to support COPE Galway’s Homeless Services.
The effects of COVID-19 have been unexpected, far-reaching and divergent; we have all had an intensely personal and unique experience depending on our individual circumstances. For the people supported by COPE Galway, COVID-19 has been devastating and it has caused uncertainty and distress to people living without a home. Self-isolating when you experience symptoms of COVID-19 is a difficult ask for anybody, but consider what you would do if you did not have a home.
In 2019, COPE Galway worked with 1,189 adults and 433 children affected by homelessness, (187 families and 868 single people). This work helped find and retain long-term housing and prevent homelessness within our community. The divergent effect of COVID-19 on incomes has exacerbated problems associated with homelessness. COPE Galway has reconfigured its homeless services to respond to this crisis by creating extra emergency capacity. Many support services have moved online because of COVID-19 and COPE Galway is finding new ways of working with homeless individuals and families to see that they continue to have access to the supports they need.
I’ve signed up to take part in the 2020 Business Sleep Out to support COPE Galway and raise €3,000 to play my part in helping to fight homelessness in Galway.
