Hi!
My name is Elizabeth Low and I am currently working on a project called Cooking Up Success this summer as a Linn Mar senior and Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student. I am gathering recipes created by local chefs to make into a recipe booklet and purchasing basic aprons to hand out to young students(especially of lower income). The goal of my project is to encourage young students in Marion and Cedar Rapids to pursue a healthy eating lifestyle. I have already partnered up with Feeding Lunches to Youth(a program that hands out free meals on weekdays in Marion and Cedar Rapids) to distribute these booklets and aprons. I also hope to partner up with Kids on Course to benefit more students in the Cedar Rapids area.
The other major goal of this project is to help businesses that may be struggling because of the pandemic. Businesses that participate in the project, whether it is donating money and sending in a recipe or just making a donation, will have their logo/motto advertised within the book. So far, I have 8 participating businesses.
This is a project that needs more funding/donations as the only support I have received are base donations from participating restaurants. My goal is to produce 300 booklets and purchase 300 aprons. This project, if implemented extensively, will have a large impact on the city of Cedar Rapids and Marion by motivating children to develop healthy habits and encouraging members of the community to support local businesses. With your help, we can benefit the children of our community by not just providing them a meal, but teaching them and showing them how a healthy meal is made.
