Care and Home Repairs For My Father

Hi all,

As many of you know, my father had a massive stroke on June 7th, 2024. This stroke very nearly took his life, and by the kindness of friends I was able to fly out to be with him for a week after it.

While my father has made significant progress physically, cognitively he is much worse than he was before. He hasn't been able to consistently retain any new memories after June 7th, and he is unable to make medical or financial decisions for himself. I've been doing this long distance, but am starting to run into some legal walls.

While I have medical POA for my father, I can't make financial decisions for him or decisions to care for his property - which I learned has some significant issues when I went to stay for that week.

I am asking for help to be able to afford the filing fees for conservatorship in the state of California for my father - the base for that starts at $435. I am also asking for help to get some of the immediate repairs to his home done so that when/if he comes home, he can do so safely and without risks. The immediately needed repairs are some emergency electrical work and HVAC work to enable him to safely be at home again, to the tune of roughly $2500 additional.

I am trying to raise $3500 to cover all of this, plus to cover any surprise fees (like apparently I might have to pay someone to serve documents? California is strange!) and to cover any surprise overages in the repairs. Anything leftover or over that goal will be being used solely for my father's care. It is possible that my goal amount may increase if other things arise that are needed for this huge endeavor.

I know that economically, everyone is feeling the pain right now. But I would sincerely appreciate any assistance that folks can provide, even just shares. I myself was just barely getting financially stable again after 8ish months of being unemployed, and the trip to CA and managing the handful of urgent repairs (plumbing, unblocking HVAC ducts, drywall and plaster repair), that I could do myself has severely depleted my finances as it is.
