Connect Seniors in Manors to the Community
Donation protected
We aim to build a local program (in Summerside, PEI, Canada) that matches seniors in a manor with volunteer "pilots" who ride specialized bicycles.
We are looking for funding to support the purchase of these specialized bicycles called "Trishaws."
Each Trishaw costs $10,000 (+ tax). As a pilot project, we hope to raise money to purchase 6 Trishaws. We have interest from two groups (Andrews Retirement Living and Community Connections) to run these programs and expect the PEI Provincial Manors to join us once they have the "red tape" figured out. Each facility would have two Trishaws.
The "Taxi" carries two people and the Flex2 carries one person in a wheelchair. The goal is to have one of each model at the three facilities.
Any funds raised above our goal will be used to fund short, safe connections from each facility to an already developed safe recreational trail. They range from 0.25 km to 0.6 km. The total cost of the safe infrastructure connections would be $2.5M.
The volunteer would schedule weekly rides (day, evening, or weekends) around the community, and a relationship would be developed. We know many seniors in manors would love the opportunity to get outdoors and explore their local community. Organizations that support adults with intellectual disabilities also support this program.

The CWA is an international program, and SAFE Summerside applied in December 2022 to become an affiliate.
Here are some images of other CWA programs in Atlantic Canada, and we hope to soon have our program up and running.
Thank you for considering our request
