Hi folks.
I am writing this on behalf of my dear sister Amara. Amara is a Congolese immigrant, a devoted single mother, and one of the most resilient women I have ever known. She has made Brooklyn her home for years, building a quiet life centered around her 5‑year‑old daughter, who is her entire world. Right now, Amara is also expecting twins, a pregnancy that should be a time of hope and preparation, but has instead become a nightmare.
This past Thursday morning, Amara was walking her daughter to school in Brooklyn when ICE agents stopped and took her into custody. Her little girl watched as her mother was led away. In an instant, Amara’s family was torn apart.
Amara came to the United States fleeing violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, seeking safety for herself and the child she already had. She has always worked hard, cleaning homes, caring for elders to provide for her daughter. She is not a criminal. She was in the process of updating her immigration paperwork when she was detained.
Now Amara sits in an immigration detention facility, pregnant with twins, separated from her young daughter and terrified for the future of all three of her children.
The pregnancy is high‑risk because of the twins, and detention is no place for a woman carrying two babies. Her legal situation is urgent: without an attorney, she faces deportation to a country she fled years ago, a country where she has no family or safe place to bring her children.
Funds raised will go directly toward:
1. Legal Fees: Retainer and court costs to file an emergency motion for release and represent her in immigration court.
2. Family Support: Childcare, food, and basic needs for her 5‑year‑old daughter while Amara is detained.
3. Pregnancy & Medical Needs: Costs related to her prenatal care, as well as communication with her lawyer and her daughter.
Amara’s daughter already asks every night when her mommy is coming home. And the twins she carries deserve to be born with their mother by their side, not behind bars. Amara is not a threat, she is a mother who just wanted safety and a future for her children.
We are asking for your help to reunite this family and bring a pregnant mom home to Brooklyn.
If you cannot donate, please share this campaign widely. We are also looking for any legal resources or community support that can help us move faster.
Updates
We will post updates as we have news about Amara’s court dates, her health, and her daughter’s wellbeing. Your support is the only thing keeping hope alive right now.
Thank you for standing with Amara and her children. #AMARA
