Utah Mask Mandate Lawsuit

COVID 19 Resources

For up to date and accurate information about COVID safety, visit the CDC or WHO websites.

We are Concerned Coalition, a non-partisan group of Utah parents, teachers, and citizens advocating for common sense public health measures. We need your donations to pay our legal fees to fight the Utah legislation that takes public health decisions out of the hands of experts and gives them to partisan politicians.

Concerned Coalition is a locally led, people-powered non-partisan movement and a 501c(4) social welfare organization.  Donations are not tax deductible. To give by mail, send a check to Concerned Coalition, 13894 S Bangerter Pkwy Suite #200, Draper, UT 84020.

Our Story

On August 3, 2021, there was no Concerned Coalition, only parents talking to parents about their concerns about the lack of Covid protections at their public schools. With the delta variant on the rise and case counts almost four times higher than last August, there was no sign anywhere that anyone in Utah was taking it seriously.

Two parents, Chris Phillips and Jenny Nazzaro, realized that their children were bound to return to class a few weeks later without a school mask mandate in place to protect them. Recent state legislation had turned local health orders into political footballs that could be overturned by political bodies. These parents decided to fight for their children’s safety.

Over three days, they had gathered 500 signatures in favor of masks, protested outside of the Utah State Board of Education , and were sharing their message on social media under the hashtag #ConcernedCoalition.

In the few short weeks since its inception, Concerned Coalition has grown to include thousands of grassroots supporters and many dedicated volunteers. We are made up of concerned parents and citizens from all political and demographic backgrounds.

Our Fight

After sending petitions to the Salt Lake County Council and the Utah County Commission, we realized that the partisan members of these organizations were unwilling to listen to our concerns. One of them even actively sought support  from anti-maskers to drown out the ten-times greater amount of letters she was receiving from people like us. Their own reelection chances were more important to them than the health of our children and our community.

We need to go straight to the source of the problem: the partisan legislation that turned public health decisions into culture war issues.

That’s why we need your help.

Our primary goal is to end this legislative overreach, return decision-making power to public health officials, and make sure all children in Utah have access to a safe education. We need a mask mandate for all schools that serve children 12 and under, children who aren’t eligible for the vaccine and have no other protection. Just this Friday, our state had 216 positive Covid cases in children , almost twenty percent of the total number of cases. As more schools open in our state without adequate protection for their students, this number is bound to increase dramatically.

As one of our founders, Chris Phillips, said, “Our children deserve our fight .”

The Utah state and local government’s disregard for necessary health care guidance during the Covid pandemic awakened a sleeping giant. The advocacy we do in Utah will help our nation in the fight to de-politicize public health.

Our legal efforts to overturn this legislation will be very expensive. We are asking for your help. Please consider a financial donation to Concerned Coalition to help us fund the legal challenges that lie ahead. If you have further questions, email us at [email redacted].

The health of our children and our communities should not be the subject of partisan politics. Help Concerned Coalition fight for the health and safety of our children, and all of us.
