Complete the Maloca for an Amazonian Indigenous Community!
Donation protected
Hi! I am raising $500 to help Abuelo William and Abuela Isabel Muzombique to complete the roof of the maloca (community spiritual house) for the indigenous communities outside of Leticia, Colombia.
The maloca is where indigenous communities of the Amazon go to be in la selva (the jungle) and connect to their natural roots and perform traditional rituals. This particular maloca is where people of Ticuna, Witota, and other tribes come to take the plant medicine yagé (colloquially known by the name of one of its ingredients, ayahuasca) in ceremony with Abuelo William.
It is a beautiful structure made by hand from the hardwoods of the surrounding rainforest. The roof is made of thousands of palm fronds carefully woven together. The previous maloca burned down ten years ago, and this one took an entire year to build. It is nearly complete except for two openings in the roof that let in water when it rains (which is almost daily).
The funds will completely cover:
- the purchasing of 100 dried palm fronds from a community member who prepares them
- the transportation of the fronds and other materials to the site
- paying the tejadoras (weavers, also members of the community) to do their skillful work of tightly weaving the fronds together
- purchasing the laminate that helps the fronds last not 5-10 years but 50+
- Any extra raised will support the purchasing of new tools for creating the community yucca farm near the maloca and/or one of many many other needs
This will be a significant gift for this community and will provide paid work to many in addition to the shared benefit of the completed maloca. If you have in any way been inspired by plant medicine, this is also a way to give back to a culture of its origin. Abuelo William and Abuela Isabel have been incredibly welcoming to me and to all others who arrive here (including other foreigners seeking the wisdom and healing of the medicine and the jungle) without asking much in return. Please help me in giving back!
