Compassion for Our Homeless Community

Hello, my name is Tonda. I’m trying to give back to my community by providing essential resources—such as hygiene products and food—to those experiencing homelessness.

When I share this, people often ask, “Why?” Why do they need more resources? Why do I care, especially at my age? So I want to take a moment to answer that.

Homelessness is a serious and ongoing crisis in our country. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough resources to support everyone who needs help, and many people are hesitant to get involved because of harmful stereotypes about those experiencing homelessness.

I speak from personal experience. When I was nine years old, my mom, my brother, and I were homeless for about a year and a half. We experienced it again for another year when I was twelve. During those times, I saw firsthand how difficult and isolating it can be.

Many people assume homelessness is tied to drugs or violence, but that was not my experience. Most individuals I encountered were kind and honest—they simply needed basic necessities like food, hygiene, and a sense of dignity. There is also a common belief that people can “just get out” of homelessness if they really want to, but it’s not that simple. Without a home address, it’s incredibly difficult to get a job, and without a job, affording a home becomes nearly impossible. It’s a cycle that is very hard to break.

Everyone has a story, and many people facing homelessness have been without stable housing for years or lack family support. Over time, the experience can take a heavy emotional toll—especially when society treats them as less than human. No one deserves to be ignored, harassed, or dehumanized simply for trying to survive.

I’m sharing this not for sympathy, but to bring awareness and to encourage compassion. Even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference, So if you are unable to help donate then please at least remember to treat people with kindness and respect no matter who they are or where they come from. We are all human beings just trying to make it by at the end of the day.
