Commuter Change - supporting Age UK

Donation protected
With Public Transport closures now taking place and a significant number of people working from home, the daily commute for many of us has become a lot shorter! For those fortunate enough to be in full-time salaried employment and able to wfh, we may even see a small daily saving accrue from the money we would have otherwise spent on our commute.

The London Underground network alone handles up to five million passenger journeys a day. At peak times, there are more than 543 trains whizzing around the capital. We estimate that the savings from these commuters alone could be north of £8 million per day, with individuals saving in the region of £20-30 per week.

Age UK - a national charity that provides support to older people - has issued an emergency appeal  after receiving high call volumes from elderly people who are without food and too nervous to leave their homes, often disconnected from families and friends. Coronavirus is particularly impacting older people, for whom the virus is more dangerous.

For those who are able, we ask that you donate any spare commuter change to help Age UK continue to provide support to older people who are in need at this challenging time.

Thank so much for your support,
The Commuter Change Team

We've done a quick (illustrative) calculation below - focusing just on the London Underground- to estimate the potential scale of what we could collectively donate:

- The Tube handles up to 5 million passenger journeys per day
- Assuming that half of these journeys are taken by commuters, that's 2.5 million commuter journeys taken each day
- Assuming the 'average commute' is from Zones 1-3, at peak time - the fare for a single journey would be £3.30
- Therefore, the total daily commuter spend on the Tube is more than £8 million (2.5 million journeys with an average fare of £3.30 per journey)
