FREE Community Trash Collection in Bombay Beach CA
Hello! We are the Ministry of Kordada, a California 501 (c)3 non-profit organization focused on the intersection of arts & social impact.
Please help us support the free community trash collection program in Bombay Beach, California - a service that has been absent for over a decade in this often overlooked town on the edge of the Salton Sea .

The Background Story:
Our adventures began with our involvement in the Bombay Beach Biennale - a renegade celebration of art, music, and philosophy that takes takes place annually in the town. Over the past four years, we have grown deeply involved in the community and have undertaken a number of projects to add beauty and art into the landscape. We are excited to continue our efforts to improve daily life by offering access to something that many of us take for granted - free trash collection. Our neighbors in Bombay Beach have been without it for more than a decade.
The Current Program:
In May 2019, we began funding a free community trash collection service. For the first time in over a decade, residents can drop their trash in the large collection bins rather than driving to the landfill (over 20 miles away) where they must pay to access waste management services.
The current program costs roughly $500 per month for two dumpsters emptied twice per week & local paid workers to staff the trash collection site. Though this is a great step, we are aiming toward a greater plan of action that would:
1) Involve a door-to-door collections program (staffed by locals) for residents who cannot transport trash from their house to the dumpster, and...
2) Supply one trash and one recycle bin per household.
3) Introduce a recycling and composting program.

The Numbers:
(Calculated assuming there are 200 households participating in the program)
Trash removal by Republic Waste Management & twice weekly staffing at collection point.
- 12 months at approx $1000/month.
- We anticipate an increase in volume and have therefore estimated an increase of costs from the
initial launch cost of $500/month.
Annual Total = approx. $12000
AFTER we have surpassed the $12000 trash collection fundraising goal, we will utilize the remaining funds towards the creation of a door - to - door service and introduction of a recycling program.
Example costs appear below:
Example one-time bin purchasing fees (we will purchase sturdy bins to last many years):
-200 black cans @ $20 each = $4000
-200 blue cans @ $20 each = $4000
Annual Total = $8000*
*if a less expensive (or FREE) option is found, all leftover funds will be used to extend the trash
collection program.
*funds from the sale of recyclables will be added to the trash collection program.
Example weekly door-to-door collection staffing:
-20 hours per week / 10 hours per person (2 person staff)
-Pay at $15/hr
-$15 x 10 hrs/wk x 4x/month = $600/month per staff
Annual Total = $14,400 per year
FUNDRAISING GOAL TO SUPPLY TRASH COLLECTION & RECYCLING THROUGH JULY 2020 - $34,400
Where does the money go?
All donations will go to the Ministry of Kordada 501 (c)3, and allocated ONLY to the Bombay Beach Trash Collection fund. We are providing a grant to the Bombay Beach Community Service District to pay for the trash collection service and local employees. There is full transparency with all billing, receipts and payments. Documentation is shared between Ministry of Kordada and the BBCSD and is also available to all donors upon request.
Any excess funds raised beyond our goal will fund the continuation of the program beyond 12 months. We plan to document this program and present it to Imperial Counting in a plea to reinstate trash collection in Bombay Beach.

Conclusion:
We need your help in keeping this program up and running! Bombay Beach is a place many of us consider special and unforgettable, and we feel passionate about helping create a better, cleaner community.
Your support makes all the difference, and we appreciate everything you do to help us along the way.
Sincerely,
The Ministry of Kordada and people of Bombay Beach
