Following the horrendous arson attack on the Peace Community Centre & Mosque in Peacehaven on the 4th October, we are hoping to raise some money to help the centre complete initial repair work and to support the mosque community.
The centre serves the Peacehaven, Newhaven, Saltdean, Rottingdean, and Woodingdean areas, and friends of all faiths in these communities are deeply saddened and distressed that this has happened.
We want to help however we can, and to demonstrate to our Muslim neighbours that we care. The disturbing anti-Muslim and far right rhetoric that has been circulating recently does not represent the views of the majority of people living here. Our community should be a safe space for people of all backgrounds and beliefs and we reject the calls for division and hatred.
Police are treating the Peacehaven fire as an arson attack and a hate crime. An unnamed volunteer at the mosque told the BBC: "that two people tried to enter through the front door, only to find it locked. They then poured a liquid at the entrance and near a car parked outside, which was set alight."
Two people inside the mosque apparently managed to escape. More details of the incident can be read in the BBC article here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2dglp43xmo
Money raised through this fundraiser will be passed to the mosque to use as they see fit to remedy any damage caused in the attack. If we exceed the target, we will liaise with local inter-faith communities and anti-racism charities to support targeted groups in our local communities.
