Pancho Mateo Community Septic Project

COMMUNITY SEPTIC SANITATION SYSTEM

Pancho Mateo is a community located it in a little town outside Puerto Plata province in the Dominican Republic called Monte llano.  This community used to be what we called batey, a place built by the government for the Haitian immigrant in this community. We have what we called barrancones which are brick buildings with little space, where four to five men used to live back when the factory was still working. Currently, we have families of six and seven living in those same buildings with no kitchen or bathroom.

The idea of Community Septic is to work with these vulnerable populations on the issue of sanitary bathrooms; increasing access by providing septic tanks and creating a sustainable system in which bathrooms, individual for each family, can connect to the tanks.

Strategic plan.

We will be working with and for the community in the creation of the septic system. Community leaders will help select strategic points so that the greatest number of individuals can connect their homes to the pipes and benefit from the project.  Individuals who volunteer to help build the septic will be the beneficiaries of the project. Our goal is the barrancones first and then the other building nearby.

Role of the community.

The community members will be part of the construction of the community's septic system. Each beneficiary will have to contribute to the creation of the septic tank and part of the plumbing to their house. Understanding the economic situation of each family is different, community members will be encouraged to  participate in a variety of ways, including physical labor, cooking, or bringing water for other workers. In this way, the project empowers people of different ages and skills to help in ways they feel best able to, and does not create an added financial burden on families.

Role of the beneficiary.

The beneficiary of the project will be the individuals or families who have their indoor toilet connected to the septic system. The beneficiary will have to buy  their toilet, and part of the plumbing lines to connect to the septic, the amount of piping will be determined by the septic's distance from their home. Before being selected  to participate in the project the beneficiary shall assume responsibility for purchasing such materials, and commit to participate in the creation of the septic system.

Where will your donation go?

This Go Fund Me will go to the cost of the septic system itself. As we said, each beneficiary will buy their own toilet and piping, but the primary cost of the septic is where we need help. Please consider donating to this project that will change the lives of so many in this community - just imagine for a second your life without a toilet in your home and you will get a glimpse at the difference this project is making for this community.

The Project in Stages:

Stage one - Septic

We build the septic, which will be use by 26 homes and 2 more bathroom for some houses where there is no space for their own bathroom.

Stage two - connecting the plumbing.

We work on getting the tubes all the way to the houses, where we will be getting each house a bathroom.

Stage three - building the bathroom.

We work inside the homes to build a bathroom. We build a wall to provide a separate space for the the toilet and a shower. We build the division with concrete blocks.

Stage four - finish the bathrooms.

We have completed 3 so far and still need 23 bathrooms.  This last part is only working inside the homes where we will have a completed toilet, shower, and ceramic tile. Because everyone deserves a nice, clean, and sanitary place to shower and use the toilet.

What's Next?

This is an ongoing project. 3 bathrooms were completed last summer and the goal is to do 3 (or more!) this summer. This is a labor of love for this community, they are putting in the time and effort in addition to any funds they can afford. Please consider helping with a monetary donation to move them toward a community with proper sanitation and a working waste disposal system.
