CREATE WITH US - Community Radio and Cafe

Help us and co-create a new community place that values cultural diversity, independence and sustainability.

DEPOT will be a community-driven radio station, cafe, and event space located in the vibrant heart of Copenhagen. DEPOT will offer high-quality independent radio programming along with an inviting and affordable cafe focusing on local, seasonal and sustainable offers. Operating as a non profit organisation, DEPOT will be a dynamic social space and creative networking hub, with a primary focus on supporting independent culture, building community connections, and promoting creators.

WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ALL ABOUT?

Now more than ever, our society needs social spaces that empower creativity, collaboration, and free critical thought. Our solution is to cultivate an accessible, community-driven space that is focused on social and environmental sustainability, with two strong collaborative initiatives, an online radio and a cafe, working collectively and sharing an amazing location in the vibrant inner city of Copenhagen.

As a joint project, we can maximise our value and impact in the local arts and culture scene, fostering even stronger relationships among local creators, and connecting to the wider Copenhagen community. DEPOT aims to be a strong presence in the cultural landscape, by collaborating with and platforming the amazing and diverse talents of artists, musicians, and culture creators in Copenhagen, and beyond.

Day after day, DEPOT will beat to the rhythm of the city. By staying curious and open, we aim to be a crossroads where diverse people and ideas meet, and new possibilities emerge. Our dynamic central location and community-focused approach will offer myriad possibilities for collaborations, mentorship, and events that will help to uplift and bring the city’s emerging musical and cultural scene closer together.

Radio

The digital radio station will focus on establishing an independent platform for creators who share a passion for music, arts, podcasting, and subculture. While numerous collectives, DJs, podcasters and artists hone their individual craft, many of these initiatives stay camouflaged in their separate niches, remaining inaccessible or unnoticed by wider audiences. We are excited to explore the potential of bringing different creators and subcultures together in the same realm, to see what new inspirations and projects can emerge.

The radio station will broadcast daily content by both local and international artists/hosts, each of whom will bring their own influence to the mix. In addition, we plan to establish artist residenciesyouth development programs, and other community outreach projects. By offering an independent platform for diverse perspectives and the opportunity to share and learn from each other, our vision is to become an umbrella organisation that strengthens and unites the local community.

Cafe & Venue

The cafe and event space offers yet another key way of building community by being a lively social hub for anyone interested in parties and events, local, sustainable and seasonal food and drinks, and community radio (powered by BRØL). Unlike other spaces, the events and programming of the venue will be curated in close collaboration with the radio station, which will be used as a gateway for reaching a wide audience and hosting a range of exciting cultural events.

The cafe will be run by talented chefs and staff together with a passionate volunteer community. All focus is on local, seasonal and affordable meals and drinks that bring sustainability and communal values into our everyday lives. We value our guests and staff as much as our food suppliers.

Imagine getting to know local farmers, and the producers of your meal, beer and coffee - we believe building such strong networks and relationships is the best way to bridge the gap between two ends. Our cafe will strive to be a living example of farm to table, nose to tail, and root to stem. 80% percent of food will be organic and high quality surplus ingredients that otherwise would have been wasted by other businesses! Now we are talking sustainability.

We are incredibly excited to be joining the house formerly known as Kulturhuset Indre By, located next to the lakes, close to Nansensgade. This large, dynamic space with its accessible location offers enormous potential for all of us to develop and grow.

WHAT IS THE GOAL AND WHO IS THIS PROJECT FOR?

Our primary goal is directly connecting with and investing in the creative community of Copenhagen. We are striving to create an accessible venue that allows community members from various backgrounds to intersect, network, and collaborate, where both known and unknown artists, musicians, and other creatives can share and promote their craft, both in person and via the radio.

We feel that positive social change comes from bottom up, from recognizing and empowering the potentials in the existing local cultural landscape. The clubbing scene has long been at the heart of a lot of social movements. Promoting localism in arts and party culture holds an important role in strengthening activism and making people feel like creative contributors rather than mere consumers.

We are inspired by existing projects in other cities that are based on forward-looking and sustainable culture-based approaches to urban community and cultural development. Uplifting local talent, creating spaces for connection and experimentation, and building strong local networks of support and collaboration have a clear positive impact on urban social and cultural landscapes. We see DEPOT becoming a welcoming meeting point of a lively exchange between artists, musicians, and other creative thinkers, along with local residents and visitors of Copenhagen.

Contributors

Everyone is co-creator. Depot is a place for people by people.
From the creators and collaborations perspective, we will aim to provide meeting and event space, technical equipment and connections to help them grow and reach their own goals. Our radio, event venue and network along with our audience will create endless opportunities for any creator joining our community. Inclusion is our core principle and community values will help anyone interested contribute with us to redefine how we see the community venues and urban culture.

Audience

We will be offering a place to meet, share and enjoy high-quality local cultural content. Besides that, we will set up both live streaming and an online library to listen to our shows. As a community-driven space, the audience also has the power to contribute and shape the space, and the success of the project relies on their support and involvement. Finally its a local place to have a snack, lunch or a drink while enjoying culture happening around you.

WHY WOULD YOU SUPPORT THIS PROJECT?

We are locally-focused project and we need support of the community and others who believe in our vision: independence, culture & sustainability.

This project is valuable to anyone who believes that we can build a stronger cultural scene and a more sustainable future by investing in our local communities and uplifting and nurturing the talents and connections around us.

We hope that anyone who shares our vision will find a way to support this project!

HOW THE MONEY WILL BE USED ONCE FULLY FUNDED?

Currently, the project has been kickstarted by personal investment by core members. This money would relieve some of the personal financial burden of the project, while enabling us to invest in key components, such as equipping the broadcasting studio of the radio.

We intend to operate with full transparency: by the end of October, we will prepare a public report of how we have used the money you supported us with.
