In September 2024 we (Helen and Jacinta) two neurological physiotherapists and our neurological physiotherapy assistant (Georgie), set up an exercise group for people with neurological conditions.
People with neurological conditions benefit greatly from regular exercise but they often find it hard to do this in a suitable environment under the supervision of skilled and knowledgeable professionals.
Our exercise group caters for people with a variety of different neurological conditions and mobility levels. We modify and adapt exercises based on the difficulties of the person.
We would like to raise money to provide additional specialist exercise equipment for people to use in our group, which will help them improve their mobility, strength, balance, upper limb use and cardio-vascular fitness. The group has been running on a not-for-profit basis and we require additional funds to purchase this equipment.
Our wishlist includes:
- Specialist bikes with inbuilt motors and arm and leg adaptations. This can be used by people with any level of muscular weakness in their arms or legs.
- An electronic hand and arm rehabilitation tool which provides exercise opportunites for people without the full use of their hands and arms.
We are both passionate about promoting and enabling exercise, particularly in this group of people who benefit not only from the expertise of neurological physiotherapists but importantly from the social, inviting and motivating ethos of the group attendees.
Feedback from an attendee:
"After suffering a stroke which left me paralysed on the left side and needing a specialist in neuro physio due to other exercise groups not being able to cater for my neuro disabilities; my physio recommended this group.
I had my first session today such a warm welcoming group in a great safe space with excellent parking (bonus for wheelchairs) put me right at ease. I was able to try every station with variations just for me, this was great as I was unsure if I would be able to participate. It was so refreshing and reassuring there are neuro physios on hand to show and help you to get the best out of each exercise in the correct method. Lovely cuppa and chat at the end of the session. It’s just what I have been endlessly looking for and I am looking forward to next week !"
Please give as generously as you can.
