Gurus has been a staple in the community for over 10 years. Priya and Baba have been there and supported our community and causes unconditionally during that time. Since 2019, they have gone through a grueling battle to bring their two adopted daughters back to the United States. During their battle with the countries, they endured COVID and countless obstacles for the adoption, costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars. They had to close the restaurant at times to go to India (which was their only source of income) for a period of time. Finally, in May, their dream came true; they were able to bring their two daughters home. But the cost of that long, drawn-out battle took its toll on the couple, their business, and their home.
Now they have run out of options. They are unable to refinance their home as well as Guru’s restaurant, which is financed together. They are faced with losing it all. Priya posted this heartbreaking message today:
We’re still here...for now.
Dear Gurupies,
We are writing to you today not just as the owners of Guru’s, but as people whose hearts have been poured into every brick, every meal, and every conversation that has made this place feel like home for the past 10 years.
Despite our best efforts, the current market rates, the hurdles in refinancing, and the ongoing financial strain have made it impossible for us to secure the refinancing we needed in time. We are now at a critical turning point. While we’re still praying for a miracle from the bank to help us keep our home, things have become increasingly difficult.
For now, we will continue with takeout only, holding on to what we can and doing our best to keep this dream alive.
This is not goodbye. This is just a pause. A deep breath before we try again. Because Guru’s was built brick by brick, with love and sweat—and that’s not something we’re ready to give up on. This community has embraced us like family. We tried to carry both the weight of a business we built from scratch and the responsibility of giving two beautiful girls a home. But eventually, we had to pick a battle. We chose the one that mattered most in that moment—our daughters.
It breaks our hearts that we may not get to see many of you as often as we used to. You’ve been more than customers—you’ve become family. Whether you’ve picked up a warm meal or kept us in your prayers from afar during our adoption journey or our rescue efforts, you’ve kept our dream alive.
We’re still here, still cooking with love. And we would be honored to see you come by for takeout, even if just for a familiar flavor or a small chat.
Please keep us in your thoughts. We hope to come back stronger, more stable, and find a new home for Guru’s soon. Until then, this community remains the biggest blessing of our journey.
And until that day comes, Chef and I are still here for you. If you or someone you know needs a warm meal, help with meal prep, or just some support, we’re only a message away. We didn’t build this place just to serve food—we built it to serve our community. And that part of our mission will always remain.
With all our hearts,
Priya & Ashni Guru
Can we band together to help them have some kind of nest egg and let them know that they are loved in this community, and we will never desert them!!!
