Community Fridges of Queens

Hi,

I am raising money for people who are going hungry in two neighborhoods
 here in north central Queens, New York City.

These two neighborhoods are home to an inordinate number of first
responders, even compared to the rest of the city. Taxi drivers, wait staff,
line cooks, and child care workers. So many of those jobs have been lost or
severely crippled with this pandemic.  A majority have never received an
unemployment check since the beginning of this crisis.

The two neighborhoods are Elmhurst and Corona Queens. So far
the needs of both of these neighborhoods have not been met. A grass roots
effort however has established what are called community fridges in both
neighborhoods. Private citizens can drop off food to the these refrigerators
and those in need can take the food. Each has a dry goods shelf as well. Both
are on the street and are permitted power. But more importantly each has a
great and trustworthy support system of near bye neighborhood people
who look after each one.

This has been the state of things since last March.
I have been supporting both fridges for the last few months because I
worked at a food bank in Corona, from last June to early November.
Sometimes lines of people as long as 7 blocks would wait to get food for
hours. That major food bank ran out of funds, and no longer operates. About
half the time I have taken groceries to these fridges, there is little food there
to speak of. The need is a very real one. Many times over I have handed my
groceries off to someone arriving at the same time as myself who asked if they could take some of the food I was about to place in the shelves or fridge.
