Help Us Unlock the Truth — One FOIA Request at a Time

Public records belong to the people. But too often, the cost of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request becomes a barrier between the community and the truth. We’re changing that — together.

I’m launching the St. Helens Community FOIA Fund, a grassroots, donor-powered initiative that gives residents the ability to submit public records requests without being stopped by high fees.

This fund will cover the costs of FOIA requests submitted by members of our community, ensuring access to the information that impacts our daily lives — from city council decisions to how our tax dollars are spent.

A supporter has generously pledged to match up to $1,000 in donations — so every dollar you give goes twice as far!

Why This Matters

Transparency isn’t just a principle — it’s a right. And it's essential for good governance, accountability, and community trust. But even a single FOIA request can cost hundreds of dollars — putting vital information out of reach for everyday citizens.

This fund ensures no one is priced out of knowing the truth.

Where Your Donations Go

Direct payment of FOIA fees and public records request costs

Support for printing, copying, and electronic delivery fees

Administrative banking fees (if applicable)

Any leftover funds will be rolled into future requests or refunded if unused

Radical Transparency in Action

In the spirit of the very work this fund supports, all donors will have access to regular bank statements, upon request, to ensure complete transparency about how funds are used.

Once the dedicated bank account is open, we will begin processing requests submitted by members of the public. A formal process for submitting FOIA requests through the fund will also be announced.
