Soca Explosion YG (Young Generation) is a divergent group of all age groups from four years old. We are a community dance group that takes part in many events in the UK. Our main project, is taking part in the Carnivals & Performances. We take part in Preston, Leeds and Manchester carnivals. While the Carnivals are the main event, we do participate in dance shows for the community, festivals etc..
It makes a positive difference because we are making sure that the young locals are off the street and into a safe environment for them, during the school holidays. We achieved this last year with over 50 members, and we are aiming to keep this going every year. We have aiming to bring the young locals and even the elderly, to participate in dance, share their skills and resources, build relationships and most importantly, to improve community life. To achieve this, we would make sure that there is a safe space for the participants/members, so they can participate in activities and other events in the UK, to be able to bring out their creative side and utilising their skills, that will make a difference in the community.
This Community Carnival group has been around for many generations, as it is usually the mothers children and then the children participate. They grow up to have a child and then their child will be part of the group. It is the circle of life. We are all a family, even if not by blood and we want to show the community that we can all come together. We are aiming to promote, so that others can join and be a part of a community group that is slowly getting bigger by the years and this will benefit the wider community, residents and even the visitors, who come to these events. We want to empower the local people in the community to create a better place for living and to come together as one and to share our knowledge and culture, and present to the community what we do, how we do it and why we do what we do.
We have attached some images of some participants in the group and how hard we all work to achieve the goal of showing the community, that we are stronger together and not divided. And our troupe won the Carnival competition. The members were praised for all their hard work they put in, but they also enjoyed being together and having fun! This is what it is about. There are many of our members who have been with us for many years, and they have been shy, now they are thriving, have become more confident knowing they had others around them that will not judge them. There have been many rapports built and we intend to keep It that way. This is why we want to continue doing this, because being a part of the community group, can make a difference to someone's life.
To achieve all our goals, we need the materials and tools to keep going. To provide our members with an amazing costume, to show off and be themselves and show to others what they have learnt and achieved!
Unfortunately, it has been very difficult to get funding from the council as they don't want to keep these events going, but any little helps. It has also been very difficult in finding a safe space for our members to use, even within the community. But our members are determined to participate in these events and performances, as it gives them something to look forward to and we are determined to keep doing what we love!
We would really appreciate the support!
Thank You !
