Let’s build this together. We are asking for crowdfunding to support the growth of our community food forest. Your donation will allow us to devote our time and energy into the building and maintaining of the food forest so we can ensure food sustainability, contribute to and support our local community.
We began this project as a family 3 years ago with the common goal to create a food forest that would nourish the land, our family and the local community. Lawa Pono Forest Farm is a space for remembering we aren’t separate from the earth or nature, a place to remember what it is to be human and to be a part of something greater than capitalist pursuit.
We’ve carefully hand cleared the land to preserve native plants, we’re continually managing invasive species and are tending to what we’ve planted which includes: Kalo, Ulu, Jackfruit, various citrus varieties, Bele, bananas, sweet potatoes, squash, avocado, black sapote, Brazilian cherry, mamake, coffee, blueberries, cacao and awa. The forest is also home to a flock of Muscovy who help fertilize our fruit trees and produce eggs in season.
While we tend to what is already here we are listening to the land, building little cabins made from reclaimed wood and pallets, harnessing power from the sun, eating from the local farmers markets and planning for what comes next. We grow extra plants and trees to share and collaborate with with our neighbors to complete big projects at one another’s farms.
Our goal is, with the help of other local growers,to be producing enough food in the next three years to be able to sustain the residents of the farm AND stock a gift based community market. Think a little free library but with fruits, vegetables, eggs and other yummy, nourishing things we all need for life. There’s a lot of work to be done still and we need the help of our greater community to make it all happen.
Lawa Pono Food Forest
Lawa Pono means plentiful and abundance in olelo Hawai'i.
Our Guiding Values: Balance, reciprocity, abundance, sharing, collaborating, community care, integrity, decolonizing and returning to the Ahupuaʻa.
Our mission is to create opportunities for connection while providing food to the local community. Our long term vision includes a cooperative community farm stand that connects people to their neighbors, the land and their food.
