Nashville is experiencing the effects of inadequate prenatal and infant care in Davidson County. In seven zip codes, the infant mortality rate has reached about 9%, a number that is significantly higher than the US NATIONAL AVERAGE. As we are seeing an increase in the amount of black women dying during childbirth, we are additionally seeing an increase in the numbers of black babies that are not celebrating their first birthdays. This is wrong and something must be done.
Community Based doulas will be trained to support the very women in their own communities. We know that representation matters but so do finances. Larger doula certification organizations provide training that is expensive and, many times, culturally inadequate. Our Black doulas are trained to help black families experience healthy pregnancies, understand their choices and options in the birth process, and offer support through the postpartum and breastfeeding processes.
Our Vision: Our goal is to serve 50 families in the year 2020-2021 by providing them with a complete BIRTH TEAM. This team will be comprised of a birth doula, postpartum doula, and breastfeeding peer counselor. We speculate that by being given this continuous support, our families can begin their parenthood journey in confidence AND be able to celebrate their child’s first birthday!
Your Donation: Every single donation will be used to provide adequate training and information to 25 training participants. Your contributions will help with: Doula tool bags, lunch for participants, venue cost, supplies needed to teach the course, bystander CPR training, transportation costs, and more!
Your support will give our participants the opportunity to begin their doula/lactation journeys while simultaneously receiving the experience they need to continue their practice in ANY community. Moreover, your support will help us provide hope for our communities. We want to change the conversation from mortality to VITALITY...will you join us?!
