My sister volunteered at a home for children that were medically fragile and HIV positive. When I was working at the Dooley House in Camden, my sister had the pleasure of coming in contact with three beautiful babies: Michael, Tyra, and Alice. They were put in the foster care system because their families were going through drug issues and some with mental health problems. After being in the foster care system for several years, my sister was told that they were going to have to be taken out of her home because they were no longer eligible for foster care.
One by one, my sister adopted them: Michael, Tyra, and then Alice, all living under one roof with my sister. Unfortunately, they had a bad landlord . They moved into a home in Camden, and there was a house torn down right next to it, but it was never insulated. Every year, every winter, when it was extremely cold, my sister had to put blankets on the wall to keep the cold air from coming in, but yet they still survived. Their landlord never came as promised to help them when there was a flood in the basement. Their landlord never showed up. My sister threw out several hundred dollars of clothes that were donated and purchased through several agencies for my sister and the kids.
My sister's landlord then sold the home without her knowledge. The new landlord, also raised her rent from $700 to $856. Months after that, without making any repairs on the property, her rent went up to $1,000. My sister managed to help these kids, all three, graduate high school. Two of them are about to go to college. Now, this final landlord just had his lawyer send a letter to my sister about foreclosure. My sister responded to the letter and she was told that he owed $10,000 in back taxes. My sister asked if she could go on a payment plan to pay off the $10,000, saying it would only take her 10 months because she was already used to paying $1,000 a month.
My sister made this place a home. I live next door to her. Me and my sister both struggle with the same things. I just don’t have three kids, but our bills are high and they’re little things that we take care of that people don’t see, on the other hand my landlord has been very kind to me and my family. He has not raised the rent since I’ve been here and it has been very sad watching my sister go through these things with someone that said they would take care of her
OK My sister tried to get a loan from several places for the $10,000 and was turned down.
Right now, we are asking for just a small hand from our community, friends, and people around the world who have undergone similar or the same situation. Right now, my sister has $2,000 that she saved up because her landlord said if she didn’t pay her rent, he would evict her before the foreclosure. The lawyer said that my sister couldn’t make payments; she had to have the whole $10,000. With tears in my eyes, I ask you just for a small bit of help, no more than $10, between $2 and $10. Can you please help my family? Every Thursday, she makes dinner for us. Please, even though this house needed so much work that we helped my sister to do on her own, now they want to take it. Please help us. Please help my sister. I’ve been living next door to her for nine years. I have a board as well. Please, can you help her? With all my heart, thank you so much. God bless you.
